The conversion of a conventional vehicle into an electric one at a reasonable cost and achieving a good performance with a good kWh/km ratio, has indeed become a reality in today’s fast changing scenario. The outcome / results of several performance tests post the conversion are encouraging, as the conversion resulted in a significantly lower average travelling cost (Appx. 0.16 Rs/km, assuming that the price for the energy of 0.63 Rs/kWh).
The IC Engine is the main component responsible for the motion of a conventional automobile, whereas the fuel tank is of secondary importance. On the contrary, in EVs, the main components are the Batteries (or energy accumulators), the Controller and the Electric Motor. Several topologies and different architectures exist, which cover different applications of pure EVs. Our present focus is on conversion of 2-wheelers and the selection of the vehicles (Scooty / Motorcycle ) was evaluated using available data of their efficiency, weight and applied power. On this basis, the best configuration for the conversion of a conventional vehicle into an EV was identified and applied to 4 models of the conventional scooter/motorcycle.
